50 Year Reunion June 18-19

         Over one hundred classmates, spouses, and friends gathered at Hillwood Country Club on Friday evening to try and guess who that gray haired person was without peeking at the name tag.   It got a little easier as people settled in for an excellent meal and an entertaining address from Larry Munson who 50 years ago had broadcast the basketball games leading to a state championship. Munson now lives in Georgia and does University of Georgia football games, but he has described the West High "miracle" as the single most exciting sports event he ever witnessed.  The coach of that team, Joe Shapiro, was also in attendance and spoke to the group after Munson's remarks.

        The next day there was a box lunch at the school and a sharing of scrapbooks and pictures from yesteryear. Cameras were everywhere as classmates from Clemons, Eakin, Ransom, Cavert, Waverly Belmont, and West Junior grouped together for "after" pictures to go with the "before" pictures in the scrapbooks. A moving ceremony was held in the school auditorium celebrating the friendship of our deceased classmates.

        That night a cookout was held at the Legends Golf Club near Franklin, Tennessee and a weekend that was planned for years came to an end with more fellowship, tears, laughter than we ever knew we were capable of fifty years ago.

        The final financial tally for the two day event revealed a profit of $2,500 which was donated to West End Middle School with a small reserve maintained for possible future reunions.
